Singer, song-writer, and storyteller Ethel Cain has released the first single from her next album Willoughby Tucker, I’ll Always Love You.
“Nettles”, and the album, are a continuation of the lore surrounding the character of Ethel Cain, first introduced in Cain’s album Preacher’s Daughter. We learn of Cain’s escape from the religious home and life she knew, only to find herself in a serious of bad choices and bad men.
The single is an 8 minute masterpiece. Cain’s traditional southern gothic influence permeates the instrumentation which her voice seamlessly floats over. We see our first glimpse into the young love between Cain and Willoughby Tucker.
"I wrote what essentially became the beginning and end of the story without realizing it. What were originally just little vignettes of emotion I was feeling at the time ultimately became the tentpoles for a larger narrative. 'Nettles' became a dream of losing the one you love, asking them to reassure you that it won’t come true and to dream, instead, of all the time you’ll have together as you grow old side by side. Every once in a blue moon, it feels good to slough off the macabre and to simply let love be.”
-Ethel Cain
Cain is taking the album on tour starting August 12th. The ‘Willoughby Tucker, Forever’ tour will take her across North America and Europe, with stops at major venues including Radio City Music Hall in New York, Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles, Greek Theater in Berkeley, London’s Eventim Apollo, and Paris’ L’Olympia.
